RP Thread: Lunch Share

[By the time lunchtime comes around, Ami heads to the roof as usual, where she thinks she'll be able to avoid the looks (and comments) of various classmates while she nibbles at her sandwiches.

What she didn't expect was to find someone already there. She looks at Nephrite uncertainly for a moment before she gives him a hesitant nod and slightly nervous polite smile.]

Is it alright if I stay up here, too? [He was here first, after all, and maybe he wanted to be alone. Except no one really ever wants to be alone.]

[Nephrite always sat there alone in a corner of the roof. He had a reputation as a delinquent, so people always gave him weird looks. If he was alone, at least nobody pointed fingers at him.

He was a bit surprised at the genius girl's question. He had seen her eating at the roof before, but she usually didn't talk to him. He nodded at her.]

You can do whatever you want.

[Not the most warm welcome, but at least it was a welcome. Or permission, anyway. Permission counted.

Ami was about to quietly start her lunch to avoid intruding when he didn't seem to feel very inclined to talk, when she noticed something and paused midway to taking out her food.]

Eh? Did you eat already? [Lunch just started, didn't it? But he didn't seem to have anything to eat with him...]

[He wasn't used to people wanting to talk to him unless it was to pick fights, so he wasn't really good at being warm or welcoming. But he had nothing against her.]

Uh. I am not hungry. [He actually hadn't brought anything to eat because he had no money to buy anything, but he couldn't really tell her that, she would laugh. Especially because it has been like that for a while now.]

But, it isn't healthy to go without lunch!

[Leave it to Ami to object to it on those grounds first. But she is very serious about this and immediately offers some of her own lunch to make up the gap.]

I have extra today. [This is a lie, but a well-meant one, so he can accept without feeling guilty.] If you eat it, it won't go to waste, so... I think that would be better.

[See? You'd be doing her a favor, Nephrite.]

[What, she had offered him her lunch? Nephrite almost wanted to accept, but it didn't look like she had brought all that much.]

It's fine, I haven't been eating lunch lately and didn't get sick. [If anyone paid attention, he had been getting thinner.]

You really shouldn't make a habit of it!

[Ami is getting More Concerned, Nephrite.

And now she's holding out half a sandwich. It'll be fine if she's just a little hungry now and has a snack later, or a bigger dinner when she gets home tonight after cram school.]

[Nephrite stares at the half-sandwich, hesitating. He hadn't eaten anything since last night's instant noodles. And he didn't have anything to eat at home for dinner. He probably should accept it.]

If you insist... [He takes the sandwich and starts eating slowly, trying to make it last longer.]

[Ami gives Nephrite a rare smile as soon as he takes the sandwich. She's really glad he was able to accept her help.

Then it occurs to her: the facebook conversation she saw between him and Beryl earlier. If Nephrite's been giving money to Beryl, could that be why he doesn't have enough for himself? Not even food for lunch?

The idea makes her angry, but she tells herself not to rush to the conclusion. She needs to know if that's even the real situation first. Ami searches her mind for a tactful way to ask as the two eat in silence. Finally, she speaks.]

Nephrite... this might not be my business, but I'm worried-

[No, wait she really is going too far.]

I'm sorry! It's just... if you really don't have lunch to eat... could it be because you're not keeping enough of your money for yourself when you earn it?

[angstennou]

[He stops eating to look at her wide-eyed. It's written all over his face that her guess is right.]

How- Why- Why are you asking me that?

Well, I saw the posts online, and...

[And she just made the connection between that, and this situation.]

Nephrite-san, is it true?

[angstennou]

I- uh… I miscalculated, that's all.

[He looked away. Nephrite couldn't lie at such a direct question, but he also didn't want her to think badly of Beryl]

[Too late. She's pretty sure from that evasiveness that Nephrite is covering for Beryl. However, for Nephrite's sake, she doesn't directly confront him with the lie. Instead, she makes quiet plans to bring extra lunch every day so that she can share some with him.]

Please be careful in the future, then.

[angstennou]

Um… Okay?

[He agrees but doesn't really understand why she insists on that. He hasn't gotten sick, it's not a big deal after all.]

And as part of lunch, here! [At this point, Ami brings out what was likely meant to be her dessert: apparently homemade cookies.

They look somewhat burnt.

She looks proud of them.]

[angstennou]

[He looks at the burnt cookies. And at her proud face. And remembers the Valentine's Day, when he had to resign himself to watch enviously all the guys get sweets from the girls while he got none.

No matter how burnt they were, he couldn't refuse the first time a girl gave him homemade cookies. It might never happen again.]

[Ami, apparently, chooses to take that to mean Nephrite likes them, which makes her face absolutely light up with a smile.

It's the first time she's given a boy something homemade like cookies. Home Ec is not her best subject. She got a 92 last time. Very upsetting.]

I'll bring some more tomorrow.

I mean, if you'd like to have lunch together again. [Oh please say yes.]

[She looks even more cute when she smiles and Nephrite can't help but stare and blush a little at that thought. But his expression becomes wide eyed again at her offer.]

Really? But I don't want to be a bother. I already owe you one.

[geniustheveil]

[Ah, he's saying he doesn't really want to... At least, that's the easy assumption for the girl used to eating alone.

So she says the only thing she can.]

You don't owe me anything at all.

[angstennou]

[ And for a boy who hardly met kindness, the concept of getting something and not giving anything in return was very weird.] No, I need to pay you back! I don't want to take advantage of you! I am not good at anything, tough... [He noticed her smile faded, though, and wondered what he had done wrong this time.]

[She was a little surprised by his vehemence, and shook her head.]

It really is alright!

Helping each other is what friends do. [Not debts and repayment, just... giving.]

[And that's the most surprising thing he has heard.]

Friends? Do you consider me a friend? No one has ever called me that.

[geniustheveil]

Well... I know we don't know each other well yet, but... I'd like to be. [This time, the smile she gives him is a hopeful one.]

[angstennou]

[And he gives her a sincere happy smile. He might finally have a friend! If he didn't screw everything up, that is.] Really? I don't know if I can be a good friend, but I'll try my best!

[Well, to be honest...] I'm not very good at making friends. So, we'll try together, alright?
