Who: Fairy!Nephrite and Ami ([personal profile] geniustheveil)
What: Nephrite presenting himself to his new godchild
When: ??
Where: Ami's room?

Nephrite was excited. After a hundred years without being allowed to have a kid assigned to him, he was given a new chance to prove himself. It was a special case, they said. The girl was a little older than the usual, but she was still so lonely that the Fairy Council decided that she could use some company. And an older person might be able to bear with Nephrite.

Seeing the girl alone in her room, he appeared before her, bowing.

"I am Nephrite, godparent at your service."

Ami blinked. This was not exactly something that studying could prepare her for, unless you counted her childhood love of fairy tales as studying. Because fairy godparents were in fairy tales.

And, um, usually fairy godmothers, but that was something Ami only noticed subconsciously, while she was trying not to realize the enormity of a little man with wings floating in the air, right in her room. She had to repress an urge to tug (gently of course) at his wings to see if they could even possibly be real.

"Nephrite?" She made the name sound completely strange, although she knew it as the name of a mineral. "A godparent?"

Yes, Ami, she chided herself, that does very well for covering exactly what he just told you, now sound a little more intelligent about it, please.

"Do you mean I can make a wish?" she had to know.

"Rule book?" Guess whose glasses are out and on her face right away.

Not that the rule book was likely to answer her real questions. Which were these:

"But... is it alright to ask why, Mr. Fairy? I mean, are you sure you were supposed to come here?" Because there's really nothing remarkable about her to merit being involved with fairies, right?

Ami is one of the very, very few people likely to read Da Rules, every page of them. But not yet, not while she was still confused and not while she still had Nephrite here to answer her questions.

Lonely... Yes, she was definitely that, but it was hard to hear someone - a stranger - know it so well that they said it so simply and plainly. She glanced downward for a moment in thought.

"One thing I really wish," she admitted, "is that Mama could have more time at home. Can you do something like that?"

Ami doesn't think much about it when the little man - fairy - first tells her that her mother will be home tomorrow. After all, mama's never been home, and, well, given Ami's history and temperament?

The fairy's probably a delusion or a hallucination from studying too hard.

But the next day, they can't get out of the house. Mama can't go to work, and that's not quite what Ami wanted. After trying every door and window, she finally goes back to her room, looking all around for the fairy who apparently managed to do this after all.

"Nephrite? Nephrite!! Mama can't be trapped in the house like this!" It isn't nice.

Unfortunately, Ami's mother is far from unobservant, which means she is definitely going to notice suddenly being in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Even if it is beautiful out here.
And the cruise ship is nice.

Ami, those are the wrong things to be noticing right now. This is not time for vacation.

She really doesn't know what to do. "Ok," she says quietly to herself, "If we're on this ship, we must have a cabin somewhere, or a room. If I can find that, I can find Nephrite-san and ask him to change this back to normal."

A few questions seem to locate the room she is sharing with her mother for this trip, and she looks around for Nephrite. "This is too obvious! She'll realize what happened!"

Well, no one would probably guess what happened.

"Nephrite." It might have been better if the voice sounded angry or upset. Instead, the voice was certain and inflexible. It was hard to imagine persuading it to change its mind.

And only one fairy had that air of utter assurance. Standing in the room suddenly was a dark-haired fairy with a golden ornament marking him as the fairies' leader: Kunzite.

"You have failed to fulfill this wish properly two times," he warns Nephrite. "If you fail a third time, you will have to return to fairy school." There is no room for argument in his tone; he is simply telling Nephrite what the future will hold.

"Wait!" Ami cries out before Kunzite can say any more. This does not seem to endear her to the fairy as he scrutinizes her. "It's not Nephrite's fault - it's mine! I wasn't clear enough!"

Or at least, she fervently does not wish to be responsible for Nephrite being placed in the difficulty of whatever this fairy probation might be.

What does she want? Ami looks uncertainly between Nephrite and Kunzite, and her voice is very soft when it finally comes out.

"I don't know if it's allowed, but... If I can really have a fairy with me, someone at my side, then what I want is for you to stay with me."

Even if that intimidating other fairy doesn't seem very receptive to most ideas.

He tilts his head as he continues to scrutinize the human girl. This is not precisely an unusual type of wish; plenty of children want to keep the wishes they get from having godparents.

But that wasn't what this - oh, yes, Mizuno Ami - That wasn't what this Mizuno Ami said, was it? What she said was that she wanted someone at her side.

Kunzite calmly holds up a hand, to silence both of them. "He has not earned this punishment yet," he reminds the girl and her fairy. "However, nor has he earned any favors."

This only brings the full force of Kunzite's attention back to Nephrite. He weill decide when it's time to go, puny fairy.

"The others do not give me such trouble," he says dryly.

"Please," Ami interposes, much more quietly and more composed, "I'll make sure nothing else happens to disturb you, Kunzite-san."

With that, finally, the stern-looking fairy leaves in a swirl of what looks like dark flower petals.

"I don't have anything to complain about," Ami tells Nephrite loyally. She thinks for a moment.

"Well..." she admits, "There's not really anything else I want." After all, she has loving parents- even if they're divorced - and she lives in a comfortable apartment with anything she needs and most things she wants.

"I just wanted someone to spend time with," she admits. "I thought maybe we could become friends, Does that sound foolish?"

"Until... I don't need you anymore?" She doesn't like that. Not at all, in fact. It sounds far too much like preparing to say goodbye when they've barely even met yet.

"But I really-" Something about him makes her say a little more than she intended. "I really do need you." Or at least, if he could really become her friend, she doesn't want to lose that. Ever.

"Oh..." said Ami thoughtfully. Yes, godchildren growing older might explain no longer needing fairies. But she wasn't sure, still, that she'd make other friends some day. Even if a fairy was telling her so.

"But I won't stop needing you," she said quietly, catching something of Nephrite's expression.
